NAC is an acetylated and highly bioavailable form of the amino acid L-cysteine, which serves as a key component of glutathione - the body’s “master antioxidant.”
Under normal conditions, supplemental L-cysteine is significantly degraded during first-pass metabolism, yielding poor absorption into the bloodstream. NAC, on the contrary, is deacetylated during first-pass metabolism, leading to a greater amount of hepatic L-cysteine.
In turn, NAC helps significantly increase hepatic glutathione content, thereby protecting the liver from oxidative stress and inflammation.
